What to look for in watersports eyewear
Eyewear for the water fails in predictable ways: it slides off, it fogs up, it blinds you with glare, or the coating dies after a summer of salt. These are the five things to check, in the order they'll bother you.
1. Polarization, against glare off the water
Water reflects light horizontally, and that reflection is what makes you squint. A polarized filter removes it, so you see the chop, the gusts and the swimmer ahead of you instead of a white sheet. It is the difference between tolerating bright water and reading it. Note that not every tinted lens is polarized — including plenty of swim goggles, which are tinted for brightness, not for glare.
2. Anti-fog, for everything that involves breathing hard
Fogging is condensation on a lens that is colder than the air you breathe against it. An anti-fog treatment spreads that moisture into a film you can see through instead of droplets you cannot. It wears out — faster if you touch the inside or rub it dry. Rinse with clean water, let it air-dry, and don't wipe the inner surface.
3. Fit and strap, the part most people underestimate
On land the fit determines comfort. On the water it determines whether you still own your eyewear at the end of the session. A strap around the back of the head, adjusted once to your head shape, survives a fall that temples would not. Check that you can adjust it without taking it off, and that the clasp doesn't sit where a helmet or hood does.
4. Lens category, and what those numbers mean
Lens categories run from 0 to 4 and describe how much visible light the lens blocks — not UV protection, which is a separate spec. Category 0 is clear, 3 is the normal range for bright sun, and 4 is so dark it is not road-legal for driving. Most sport lenses for open water sit in category 3. It is worth checking the category of a specific lens rather than assuming from how dark it looks.
5. Salt water, the thing that kills eyewear slowly
Salt crystallises in hinges, dulls coatings and hardens nose pads. Nothing dramatic happens in one session; everything happens over a season. Rinse after every salt or chlorine session, air-dry rather than rub, and store it in a case so the lens doesn't rest against anything. This one habit outlasts any spec on the box.

Do I need polarized lenses for swimming?
For swimming itself, no — under the surface there's no glare to filter, and what matters is the seal and the anti-fog. Polarization earns its keep above the waterline: sailing, kitesurfing, SUP, anything where you look across the water.
Can swim goggles double as sunglasses?
